There are so many opportunities to travel in whatever capacity you want, on any budget, wherever you want! Join me and your fellow travelers in making the MOST of your time and money.
Why listen to me? I’m in my early 20s, and have been to nearly 20 countries. Most of them I visited alone – or met up with someone for only part of the time I was there. I currently live outside the United States, and have funded my travels almost completely on my own, even through my broke college years. I LOVE being home, but being abroad brings me a special, unexplainable feeling of joy.
But I wasn’t always a traveler. Growing up, I just wanted to feed my Neopets (do you remember those?) and battle my Pokemon (my first complete obsession). I waited for my family to take me places or was perfectly happy to stay at home. Then, I decided to join some friends who were going to Nicaragua on a medical/health mission trip in college – and that’s when my world changed! For the first time, I was in a place where I didn’t know the language and was unfamiliar with everything in my environment. I got homesick three days into the trip, even though I was with all these people from my school. As uncomfortable as I was on the one hand, on the other, I was ecstatic to be in a part of the world I knew nothing about, doing something that facilitated cultural exchange and allowed me to contribute to these communities that were welcoming me, a perfect stranger. It was this pulse of interest that drove me to try travel again, and then again and again, and led me to look for any strategies that would let me go to more places and see more things.
Since then, I have used all kinds of strategies to reduce costs, spent months on the road, read hours of content, and spent my own money figuring things out. My journey is still in progress, and I’m happy to share with you what I have learned along the way.
